Rebecca L Swanson

Mathematics Educator

My name is Rebecca, and I love being a high school math teacher. My favorite part of teaching math is seeing that lightbulb moment in a student who has been struggling to understand a concept. I am passionate about creating Thinking Classrooms to develop students as problem solvers.

Educational Philosophy

I strive to create a safe, positive atmosphere in my classroom in which students are comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I value relationships and believe that all students can learn mathematics. I am dedicated to my students and sharing the joy that mathematics can bring into their lives. Read more...

Notes from former students

"Ms. Swanson is a really unique teacher in my opinion. Having been in four different schools in my life, I’m sure I will remember her first when I think of my teachers. She prioritizes her student’s mental health yet knows when they need an extra push to reach their potential. Of course, she’s also a really great teacher and takes things at the student’s pace. I never sensed that she got frustrated or disappointed when someone might not understand a certain concept, she takes it in stride and works on it."

"Mrs. Swanson has been an outstanding teacher. Probably my best teacher in high school. As a student who's typically "bad at math" and has been struggling through all of my past math classes, AP calculus was the first time where I actually enjoyed the learning. The content is presented in a organised and structured way that makes it easy to learn, review and find past practice content. This leaves the class time for practice which is great because the teacher is right there to help you. Mrs. Swanson is super enthusiastic and loves math to a level that I can't personally understand, but it helps when the teacher absolutely adores the subject. Also, it's clear the Mrs. Swanson wants you to succeed in the class and that you are not on your own; there are often multiple chances to improve your grades which serves as a motivating factor to do better. Overall, Mrs. Swanson is an exceptional teacher who has left a lasting positive impression on me and all my friends."

"Ms Swanson is one of the nicest teachers I've had at ACS. Calculus is an intimidating course but Ms Swanson makes it fun and manageable. She is always willing to help and explains problems in an easy and comprehensible way. Math is truly fun in Ms Swanson's class."

"Thank you for being the most supportive and incredible teacher I've had thus far in high school! It would have been so much easier to convince me to drop to SL but you were nothing but supportive, and I appreciate it so much -- it's probably part of the reason I'm fully comfortable pursuing math in the future. Thank you <3 :)"

"She creates a comfortable learning environment and makes the math comprehensible. when we struggle to understand concepts, she goes over them and explains them in a variety of ways to ensure we truly understand it."

"Ms Swanson, thank you for everything. I consider myself very lucky to have had you as my math teacher. Who knew math class could be so enjoyable? You definitely pushed me to be a better student -- and a better person. I hope my brother gets you next year!"

"Seriously though, thank you Ms. Swanson for a great 3 years of being my math teacher. The students you’ll teach in the future are really lucky to have a teacher who thoroughly explains everything and understands the needs of her students. Thank you for teaching me the great subject of math and for writing my recommendation letter for university. You have never let me down and I hope that you have good memories of us :)"

"I would like to say thank you for, the rec letter, your great smile, and your passion in your subject. You have been one of my all time favorite teacher and I am sure many others can agree. Thank you for helping me get ready for my future and best of luck with yours."

"Thank you for helping me finish SL math. I never thought I was a math person until I had you. Your class was always so welcoming even when the math was hard. I will miss you!"

"I like that you talk through all of the problems and take it at a speed so that we can all understand. I also like that you color code your notes as it helps us to follow along."
